UNIDO strengthens co-operation with international partners on inclusive and sustainable development at GSTIC 2017

BRUSSELS, 24 October - LI Yong, Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), has travelled to Belgium to attend the Global Science, Technology and Innovation Conference (G-STIC) 2017 and to meet with the Minister-President of the Flemish Government of Flanders, Geert Bourgeois and others.

Speaking at the GSTIC 2017 conference, Director General LI Yong highlighted the importance of “the active participation of all sectors of society to contribute to the world-wide implementation of new technologies, and new ways of producing and consuming.” GSTIC aims to accelerate the development, dissemination and deployment of technological innovations that enable the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) primarily through providing a platform for exchange, bringing a great multitude of global actors together.

The Director General also spoke at the UN Day and met with the Minister-President of the Flemish Government of Flanders, Geert Bourgeois during his two-day visit. The meeting aimed to strengthen UNIDO’s ties with Flanders and explore opportunities for cooperation in areas including Industry 4.0, the circular economy, and sustainable cities.

Meetings with representatives of the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO), and Chantal De Bleu, Director-General of the Wallonia Export and Foreign Investment Agency (AWEX) focussed on strengthening technical cooperation based on expertise in green technologies and their innovation clusters.

During his visit, Li highlighted UNIDO’s unique position as a gateway to markets, investment and partnerships in the developing world. UNIDO’s technical cooperation portfolio consists of 850 projects distributed over around 100 countries with a total budget of US$1.3 billion.
