Agenda

  • Key Messages
  • Objectives
  • Guiding Questions
  • The development of competitive and sustainable industrial parks and the promotion of low-carbon urban-industrial development rely on an effective and well-functioning industrial policy and strategy that fosters partnerships and collaboration between different actors and stakeholders.

Sustainable industrial parks and urban industries help accelerate industrial development by addressing infrastructure constraints, attracting investment, stimulating innovation, improving production efficiency and fostering social inclusion and environmental protection.

  • The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development recognizes the importance of inclusive and sustainable industrialization and the infrastructure that supports it in order to eradicate poverty. Industrial parks (including various forms such as eco-industrial parks, agro-industrial parks, industrial zones, etc) can serve to overcome constraints that developing countries face in achieving industrialization, including barriers related to access to information, technology, and finance; as well as high production and transaction costs due to lack of infrastructure and weak institutions. It also provides opportunities for the sustainable and inclusive industrialization of cities.

In line with the General Conference’s theme of “Industry 2030 – Innovate. Connect. Transform our Future”, this event focuses on promoting an innovative approach for developing inclusive and sustainable industrial parks and pursuing low-carbon urban-industrial development through an integrated framework of actors and stakeholders, including the promotion of UNIDO’s forthcoming “international guidelines for the development of industrial parks”. The event also brings together and connects stakeholders and partners by organizing a platform for the exchange of know-how and experience on different aspects of industrial parks and showcase their contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular, Goal 9. It also contributes towards streamlining and transforming UNIDO’s approach on industrial parks and sustainable cities by ensuring coherence and alignment of activities, as well as strengthening local ownership, partnerships and investment promotion.

    • How can industrial parks contribute to inclusive and sustainable industrial development, structural transformation and innovation in developing countries and economies in transition?
    • How can different industrial park stakeholders, i.e. industrial park sponsors, regulators, developers, operators, financers and tenants effectively contribute to the development of environmentally responsible and competitive industrial park?
    • How can enhanced connectivity and collaboration between cities, the private sector and development agencies contribute to low carbon urban-industrial development?
