UNIDO is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability. The mission of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), as described in the Lima Declaration adopted at the fifteenth session of the UNIDO General Conference in 2013, is to promote and accelerate inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) in Member States. The relevance of ISID as an integrated approach to all three pillars of sustainable development is recognized by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which will frame United Nations and country efforts towards sustainable development in the next fifteen years. UNIDOs mandate is fully recognized in SDG-9, which calls to Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation. The relevance of ISID, however, applies in greater or lesser extent to all SDGs. Accordingly, the Organizations programmatic focus is structured in four strategic priorities: Creating shared prosperity; Advancing economic competitiveness; Safeguarding the environment; and Strengthening knowledge and institutions.
Each of these programmatic fields of activity contains a number of individual programmes, which are implemented in a holistic manner to achieve effective outcomes and impacts through UNIDOs four enabling functions: (i) technical cooperation; (ii) analytical and research functions and policy advisory services; (iii) normative functions and standards and quality-related activities; and (iv) convening and partnerships for knowledge transfer, networking and industrial cooperation.
DIRECTORATE OF EXTERNAL RELATIONS AND POLICY RESEARCH (EPR)
The Directorate, headed by the Managing Director and Deputy to the Director General provides guidance on the Organizations external relations and advocacy with its Member States and other stakeholders and partners in the United Nations system, the broader development community, civil society and academia. In addition, the Directorate oversees the Organizations policy research and statistics activities and the Organizations normative contribution to Member States and global development community in achieving the SDGs.
UNIDO Liaison Offices: Brussels (EPR/BRO), Geneva (EPR/GVO) and New York (EPR/NYO)
The main responsibility of these offices is to ensure the effective promotion and representation of UNIDO in Brussels, Geneva and New York. As such, they maintain close contact and communication with missions of Member States in their respective locations; raise awareness of and support for UNIDOs programmes and activities; represent UNIDO in meetings of intergovernmental and inter-agency bodies; promote partnerships and cooperation with United Nations system organizations, civil society and the private sector and in the case of the Brussels Office also enhance cooperation with the European Union; and report on major trends and developments of strategic importance for the work of the Organization.
This position is located at the UNIDO Liaison Office in Geneva which main responsibility is to ensure the effective promotion and representation of UNIDO in Geneva.
The project administrator will assist the UNIDO Representative in implementing the work programme of the Geneva Office. This work programme breaks down into two main parts- one related to the participation in inter-governmental meetings and the organization of UNIDO events with a view to ensuring that ISID is recognized as a relevant policy objective in trade, investment and employment discussions in Geneva (outcome 1); the other related to strengthening partnerships with Geneva-based UN entities and implementing a targeted public diplomacy /communication (outcome 2). The main emphasis of the project administrators work will be on outcome 2, while also working on outputs under outcome 1 notably those related to the establishment of a group of Friends of Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development in Geneva as well as supporting the organization of a number of UNIDO events in Geneva.
Duty Station: Geneva, Switzerland (UNIDO Office)
Approximate duration: 6 months (with the possibility of extension)
The Project Administrator shall perform the following tasks under the supervision of the UNIDO representative in the UNIDO Geneva Office:
- Contribute to develop new partnerships and monitoring/coordinating existing partnerships, especially in the context of UNDS reform and the Third Industrial Development Decade for Africa (mapping of services and identifying scope for synergies with ILO, UNCTAD, ITC, ITU);
- Contribute to develop and implement a targeted public diplomacy and communications strategy- including media outreach and social media;
- Provide substantive support for the establishment and functioning of a group of Friends of Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development;
- Provide substantive support for the organization of a number of UNIDO events in Geneva on trade, investment and employment;
- Provide support to UR/UNIDO colleagues to ensure adequate UNIDO participation in /coverage of priority intergovernmental and expert meetings and ensure adequate follow-up;
- Assist in organizing yearly briefings and consultations with GVA-based entities regarding the implementation of the Third Industrial Development Decade for Africa (IDDA III).

Advanced university degree in economics, political science, international relations, political economy/ international trade or other relevant discipline.
Fluency in written and spoken English is required, French would be of advantage.
Field of Expertise
At least three years of professional experience in trade, investment and development issues at the international level. Familiarity with bi/multi-lateral technical assistance providers in the area of trade development and trade capacity building and experience in the UN system would be an asset.
Ability to research and analyse information. Ability to write in a clear and concise manner. Ability to work effectively in multi-cultural teams.
