UN Energy was established to help ensure coherence in the UN system’s multi-disciplinary response to the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) and to ensure the effective engagement of non-UN stakeholders in implementing WSSD energy-related decisions. It aims to promote system-wide collaboration in the area of energy with a coherent and consistent approach since there is no single entity in the UN system that has primary responsibility for energy.
The group focuses on substantive and collaborative actions both in regard to policy development in the energy area and its implementation as well as in maintaining an overview of major ongoing initiatives within the system based on the UN Energy work program at global, regional sub-regional and national levels.
In August 2007, the group elected Kandeh Yumkella, Director-General, United Nations Development Organization (UNIDO) as Chair and Olav Kjorven, Assistant Administrator, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as Vice Chair. Secretariat services are provided by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).
Recent Events & Publications:
The “Energy for Development Day” was jointly organized by UN-Energy and the Secretary-General’s Advisory Group on Energy and Climate Change (AGECC). This major event provided an opportunity to discuss key issues in energy and development with United Nations organisations, government representatives, and other senior executives from the private sector. It served as a platform to launch the report of recommendations of the AGECC and to discuss how best to take the recommendations and turn them into concrete actions. Further, the following two UN-Energy publications were launched at this event:
Delivering on Energy – An overview of activities by UN-Energy and its members.
This publication provides highlights of major ongoing initiatives and presents the most recent publications by UN-Energy and its members. It illustrates the significant effort by the United Nations system to support the transition to a sustainable and clean energy sector.
UN-Energy – Looking to the Future
This publication is aimed at contributing to the discussion on the future functioning of UN-Energy. It presents a number of options for enhancing the delivery capacity of UN-Energy to better serve the global community and provide a strong foundation for collective and coordinated action.
