Laboratory analyses

Chemical analyses should be focused mainly on the determination of the principal pollutant levels in soil and groundwater. For this reason, these analyses will vary very much, depending on the present type of contamination. Nevertheless, quality assurance and quality control measures must be applied during the implementation of these analyses:

  • Use of standard and official analysis methods

  • Validation of analytical methods used: determination of uncertainty, sample detection, blank levels, calibration, etc.

  • Accreditation according to ISO 7025 (International Standards Organization)

The laboratory must provide analytical reports including the used analytical methods and their detection limits. If requested, the main documentation about the performed quality controls will be provided. Furthermore, the laboratory should provide or at least indicate all the necessary recipients for soil, groundwater, etc. samples and instructions for proper preservation measures, as well as volumes that should be taken in each case.

Different international analytical methods (European Norms (EN), International Standards Organization (ISO), US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), American Public Health Association/American Water Works Association, etc.) and well-established methods that are in use as official methods of analysis should be used, after approval of a Project Manager. The used analysis methods must be validated in real conditions by participating and nominated laboratories; results of validation should be reported.
