The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is organizing a symposium in Vienna on 23 November 2012 to mark Africa Industrialization Day.
The annual commemoration of the Africa Industrialization Day was mandated by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 44/237 of 22 December 1989. From 1990, with the support of the United Nations family, African countries as well as UNIDO field offices worldwide have been celebrating the AID on 20 November of each year. This year the AID will be celebrated on 23 November. In order to commemorate the AID, UNIDO is organizing a symposium that allows for a platform for government officials, ambassadors, private sector, NGOs and academia to discuss issues related to sustainable industrial development in Africa. The symposium will be held at the Vienna International Centre (VIC) from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m., and will be followed by a cocktail reception.
The AID serves as an important occasion for Africa’s leadership to reflect not only on the progress made, but also to reinforce efforts towards sustainable industrial development. This year, the AID will focus on “Accelerating Industrialization for Boosting Intra-Africa Trade”. This theme is particularly relevant given the series of African trade-related conferences held this year, the last of which was the VIII Africa Trade Forum organized by UNECA in September 2012.
The Director-General of UNIDO, Kandeh K. Yumkella will take part in the panel of the symposium, together with other high-level panellist from academia, private sector, UN-agencies and Government. The symposium will be followed by a reception.
