METU Technopolis (MUTP)

Background: Being established in 1991 as a joint stock company by Middle East Technical University Development Foundation, Teknopark manages the first and the biggest science park of Turkey, METU-Technopolis (METUTECH). METU-Technopolis, located in METU Campu, on 110 ha with a 40 ha construction area and approximately 200.000 m² of enclosed area, is 7 kms far from the city center of Ankara, lies in the western corridor of the main development axis of the city. It is connected to the main transportation arteries from more than one junction point.

METUTECH hosts over 150 companies 75% of which are SMEs. The existing company profile of METUTECH is based on software development, IT, defense and electronics industry. The incubation center of METU-Technopolis serves 38 micro sized companies; most of which are spin offs from Middle East Technical University. About ten million Euros have spent in last four years for completing the infrastructure and facilities of the science park. Today, METUTECH operates in 60,000 square meters closed area.

METUTECH, provides several free of charge services to its clients on different subjects, like as IPR, licensing and legal issues (such as contract management), international marketing, and financing. The bilateral organic relationship with Middle East Technical University and its 19 research centers assists METUTECH to render RTD dissemination services, as well.

As of today, METUTECH manages 30 national and international projects (4 of which are EU projects). The company has a wide level of knowledge and practice in project management, from scheduling to book keeping, coordination and control. Ankara Cyberpark (ACP)

Background: Ankara Cyberpark is a Science and Technology Park established jointly by Bilkent University and its affiliate Bilkent Holding, parent company of several leading businesses with software development and R&D functions. Bilkent University Communications and Spectrum Management Research Center (ISYAM) also operates in Ankara Cyberpark. While Ankara Cyberpark is established in the west side of Bilkent University campus area, its proximity to the two other prominent academic institutions of Turkey, METU and Hacettepe University, represents a great advantage for Cyberpark members.

Ankara Cyberpark has been declared as Technology Development Zone on November 12th, 2002. It is foreseen that at the end of the 10 years of development period, there will be over 400 firms and more than 10,000 qualified employees functioning in Ankara Cyberpark, which will be established on 558,000 m2 of Bilkent University campus area with 200,000 m2 closed space, including office premises, industrial and storage areas.

MRC Technological Free Zone (TEKSEB)

Background: TÜBITAK-MRC realized its technopark project as a technology incubator (now also called Technology Development Center) in 1992 to enable the start and growth of high-technology companies by preparing an environment suitable for transfer of knowledge and technology accumulation. In January 2000 TÜBITAK-MRC signed the agreement with the Free Zones General Directorate to develop its technopark as a Technological Free Zone (TEKSEB).

TÜBITAK-MRC Technological Free Zone (TEKSEB) started to operate in December 2001, and between 2002 and 2003 the number of tenants reachted a total of 20. TEKSEB has a total are of 36 hectare and is located within the premises of TÜBITAK-MRC’s 800 hectare campus in Gebze. It is at a distance of 45 km to Istanbul and 35 km to the industrial city of Izmit over the TEM motorway, 15 km to the Sabiha Gökçen Airport and 5 km to the Eskihisar ferry landing. Focus sectors: ICT, Energy, Environment (earth & maritime sciences), Agro Food, Advanced Engineering (material sciences), Chemistry, Electronics (metrology, cryptology), Biotechnology (genetic engineering)

GOSB Technopark (GOSB)

Background: GOSB initiated a technopark project (with incubation centre) jointly with Israeli companies which came in force in 2002 with an agreement. GOSB and the Automotive Sub-Industrial Organized Zone (TOSB), with a network of communications and the current sectoral and industrial structure, deliver services at international level.

GOSB is located in the north of the Trans European Motorway, 7 kms from the center of Gebze and 55 kms from Kadiköy, Istanbul. Sabiha Göksen Airport and Port of Derince are within 15 km and 34 km. GOSB is in the centre of Marmara Region which makes up 2/3 of the Turkish market.

Established institutions and/or companies: Currently there are 13 tenants operating in GOSB Teknopark: 3 high-tech companies operating in their own buildings and 10 small entrepreneurs sharing the temporary building. The construction of the first official technopark buildings will be concluded in January, and approximately 63 companies (software and high-tech) will be established.
