The new Permanent Representative of Mexico, Ambassador Alejandro Díaz y Pérez Duarte presented his credentials today to UNIDO Director-General, Kandeh K. Yumkella.

Immediately prior to his current appointment, from July 11, 2003 to September 4, 2007, Mr. Duarte was Ambassador of Mexico to Greece.

Ambassador Duarte began his professional career in the private sector, first for one of Mexico's largest car service companies (1970 to 1980) and then from 1980 to 1987 as general manager of Kimberly Clarke de México.

He has been a member of the National Action Party since 1964 and has held various positions on its Nationial Executive Committee. From 1984 to 1993 he was Director of Communications and then from 1993 to 2003 a member of the International Affairs Committee.

The Ambassador was a member of congress during the LIV legislative period (1988 to 1991) and the LVI legislative period (1994 to 1997). While serving in the lower house of parliament, he was secretary of the External Affairs Commission. He was also counselor in the External Affairs Commiission of bothe the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Ambassador Duarte was born in Mexico City on July 17 1945. He graduated as an electrical mechanical engineer from the Ibero-American University in Mexico City in 1967. In 1969 he obtained a Diploma in Economic Engineering from the Superior Technical School in Munich, Germany.

The Ambassador speaks English and German fluently and has a good knowledge of Modern Greek and Italian.
