UNIDO contributions to the HLPF review of SDG 9 in 2023:

UNIDO contributed to the 2023 HLPF review of SDG 9 in various ways, including through the organization of a global expert group meeting in March together with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The event brought together stakeholders from different sectors to take stock of SDG 9 progress and recommend ways forward. The outcome document serves as thematic input to the HLPF.

With this year’s thematic focus on financing sustainable industrial transformation, UNIDO was a key contributor to the 2023 Financing for Sustainable Development Report. The report calls for a new generation of sustainable industrial policies to scale up investments and lay the foundation for the needed transformations. The 2023 ECOSOC Financing for Sustainable Development Forum in April highlighted the importance of inclusive and sustainable industrial development for the achievement of other goals, which was further echoed in the outcome document. More on how a new green industrial age can be a breakthrough for the SDGs can be read here.

UNIDO also co-led the thematic session on SDG 9 at this year’s ECOSOC Youth Forum, titled “Harnessing the potential of youth to turbo-charge SDG 9 – infrastructure, industry and innovation”, in partnership with UNCTAD, MGCY, ICMYO, and with the support of FAO and ITU.

At the ECOSOC STI Forum (8th Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals) in May, UNIDO provided expert inputs to the special event on “Implementing national STI4SDGs roadmaps” and contributed to side events, including on “Enablers for transformative change to sustain people and the nature centered world”. The UNIDO side event on “Partnering to build innovation capacities for UN 2.0: The case of Innovation Labs” stressed the importance of utilizing innovation labs and drawing inspiration from other industries, to support the transformation towards a UN 2.0.
