Background

The origins of the Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit (GMIS) can be traced back to 2016. A joint initiative of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MOIAT) of the United Arab Emirates, GMIS was established in order to provide a global platform addressing the multi-faceted spillovers of the Fourth Industrial Revolution/digital transformation, through multi-stakeholder discussion, knowledge dissemination and action.

Since then, the profile of GMIS has grown greatly, through the successful hosting of GMIS Flagship Editions/Summits in Abu Dhabi (2017); Yekaterinburg (2019); Hannover Messe (2020, virtually); and Dubai Expo (2021), as well as the addition of GMIS legacy initiatives, aiming to advance the discussions to concrete cooperation ventures and actions. In 2023, GMIS will break new ground by hosting its Flagship Edition in parallel to COP28 in Dubai, thus giving it even greater visibility at the highest level of global policymaking.

Focus

To this end, several events will take place in advance of GMIS 2023, among them an event at UNIDO Headquarters in Vienna, entitled, “Smart Manufacturing: People * Art * Living”. This event will serve to raise the profile of the upcoming GMIS 2023 Flagship Edition amongst Vienna-based stakeholders. It will showcase how smart manufacturing can improve people's lives, enhance arts and enable creativity and innovation. People, art, and living form meaningful components of purpose that smart manufacturing should serve and address by providing new opportunities and development challenges.

This event will be separated into two parts, including Part I focusing on “Smart Manufacturing: People * Living” and Part II focusing on “Smart Manufacturing: Art”. These two parts will be held individually, Part I: “Smart Manufacturing: People * Living” will take place on 9-13 October 2023, and Part II: “Smart Manufacturing: Art” will be held in January 2024 (date to be announced soon).

This event in October includes opening ceremony at the Rotunda, discussion panels, relevant exhibitions, side events, workshops, and business matchmaking sessions. This event will offer valuable insights, discussions, and networking opportunities that highlight the crucial role of individuals in shaping the future of manufacturing and industrialization.
