UNIDO at SPIEF 2019: Women executives in building successful business models
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in cooperation with the Council of the Eurasian Women’s Forum established under the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and the Roscongress Foundation will hold a panel session titled “Women executives in building successful business models” on 6 June 2019, the first day of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2019.
Women’s economic empowerment constitutes an important driving force of economic development and growth, as well as a key component of inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) as reflected in the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Although women’s empowerment has been high on the global development agenda in recent years, consolidation of efforts on all levels is much needed. With women all over the world increasingly launching their own businesses and gaining more economic independence, they are still notably underrepresented in leadership and managerial positions in both the public and the private sector.
Against this backdrop, the UNIDO panel session at SPIEF 2019 will contribute to the global discussion on women’s economic empowerment from the standpoint of women-executives in large enterprises. It will also seek to consolidate a set of business practices and models helping women attain leading positions in the industry.
Federal and regional policy-makers, representatives of the business community and experts from international organizations will get together to discuss the prerequisites for the creation of an enabling environment for women’s leadership in economic and industrial development. The discussion will also address the opportunities and challenges for women stemming from digitalization and the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
The UNIDO panel session, which is expected to attract more than 100 participants, will take place from 09.00 a.m. to 10.15 a.m. on 6 June 2019 at the EXPOFORUM. The opening remarks will be delivered by LI Yong, UNIDO’s Director General and Galina Karelova, Deputy Chairperson of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.
The session builds on the success of previous events organized by UNIDO with funding from the Government of the Russian Federation at SPIEF, including the interregional forum titled "Women's Entrepreneurship - Challenges and Solutions for Europe and the Arab Region" in 2017 and the international forum titled “Increasing the contribution of women to economic growth and prosperity: Creating an enabling environment” in 2018.
SPIEF is one of the most prominent international events hosted by the Russian Federation. Every year, it attracts more than 14,000 participants from over 140 countries. SPIEF brings together heads of states, political leaders, chief executives of major international companies, and representatives of international organizations to discuss the most pressing economic issues.
