UNIDO ITPO Tokyo was established in March 1981 based on an agreement between UNIDO and the Government of Japan. The mission of UNIDO ITPO Tokyo is to help developing and emerging countries as well as economies in transition in their efforts to achieve sustainable economic development by promoting foreign direct investment and technology transfer from Japan.

A wide range of sectors are covered such as manufacturing, agro-based industries, environment and energy related industries, as well as the promotion of small and medium-sized enterprises. UNIDO ITPO Tokyo believes that its activities can support inclusive and sustainable development in developing and emerging countries, and consequently promote and foster the international outreach of Japanese industries.
