EU and UNIDO support Armenia to develop its first National Quality Policy for Good Governance

YEREVAN, 20 October 2022 - The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) organized a workshop to build consensus on the country’s vision of its pioneering National Quality Policy and the National Quality Infrastructure (NQI) Strategy.

The workshop provided a platform for over 50 policymakers and senior officials from line ministries, quality infrastructure institutions and private sector stakeholders. At the workshop, participants reviewed the current context of quality infrastructure (QI) in Armenia and discussed the vision of the country’s future quality infrastructure.

“The QI services are necessary for all aspects of life, be it science, innovation, security or food safety”, said Karen Azaryan, Trade Officer from the EU Delegation to Armenia.  He emphasized the importance of supporting QI development for Armenia and highlighted the wide participation of various state ministries and institutions at the event.

Zhanna Zakaryan, Head of the QI Development Department of the Ministry of Economy emphasized that the importance of the project funded by the EU and implemented by UNIDO and noted, “the main priority is to improve the metrology system in Armenia by strengthening the knowledge of national stakeholders in that field and by establishing four measurement laboratories”.

Anahit Simonyan, UNIDO Country Representative welcomed participants noting, “This workshop is a continuation of an important process which started in July this year to develop the National Quality Policy and Quality Infrastructure Strategy. The presence of national partners from the different ministries and agencies paves the way for a strong institutional framework to be established and encourages inter-sectoral dialogue.”

This workshop was held under the auspices of the UNIDO project “Support to Quality Infrastructure in Armenia”, funded by the European Union. It aims to develop national metrology capacity so as to provide sustainable and internationally recognized services to stakeholders in Armenia.
