Peace Building Efforts in Indonesia

29 January 2009

Within the context of "Realizing Minimum Living Standards for Disadvantaged Communities through Peace Building and Village-Based Economic Development" for Maluku Province, a project document for the UN Human Security Trust Fund was signed on 29 January 2009 in Indonesia. The signing ceremony took place at the premises of the Ministry of Industry in Jakarta.

Maluku is one of the poorest provinces in Indonesia. According to the World Food Programme Poverty Map of Indonesia publication (2005), incidence of poverty in the province has been higher than 30 %. Despite the extended complex problems, there is, on the other hand, a sincere wish on the part of nearly all Maluku people to progress the peace building process. The current project will assist the provincial government in addressing the complex and multi-faceted problems related to the building of a stable peace situation in the aftermath of the ethnic conflict.

The project will focus on four main interventions to be implemented in 3 years in around 20 villages with a beneficiary number of more than 20,000:

  • Village organization and empowerment
  • Sustainable livelihood development through education and technology transfer
  • Peace building and conflict management
  • Improving overall living and occupational & health conditions.

The project document has been developed in cooperation between UNIDO and ILO and will be jointly implemented with UNIDO as the Administrative Agent and Lead Agency. The signed project document was exchanged by Mr. Imran Farooque, UNIDO Representative Jakarta, with counterpart Mr. Dedi Mulyadi, Head of Industrial Research and Development, Ministry of Industry. Mr. Takio Yamada, Minster of the Embassy of Japan to Indonesia, as well as  Mr. Triyono Wibowo, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, were also present at the ceremony.
