UNIDO and Finland CSW68 Side Event

Vienna, 14 March - In a bid to promote gender parity in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) industries, an online side event was held during the 68th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68). Organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in collaboration with the Government of Finland, the event sought to explore strategies for enhancing women's participation and leadership in STEM fields.

The CSW, a pivotal entity within the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), dedicates itself to advancing gender equality and women's empowerment globally. Against this backdrop, the UNIDO-Finland CSW68 side event titled, "Advancing Gender Equality in STEM Industries: Strategies for Increased Participation and Leadership," resonated profoundly with the overarching mission of CSW68.

 Context and Objectives

The opening remarks, delivered by Sanni Grahn-Laasonen, Finish Minister of Social Security, emphasized the critical necessity of closing the gender gap in STEM disciplines to achieve sustainable and inclusive industrial development. Highlighting the theme of CSW68 - economic empowerment of women and girls – Sanni Grahn-Laasonen underscored the pivotal role of gender equality in driving economic growth: "If women are not involved in technological development, the sector does not understand women's needs or reflect the actual gender distribution in society."

The discussions delved into the multifaceted challenges hindering women's advancement in STEM fields, ranging from societal norms and stereotypes to workplace biases and systemic barriers. Importantly, the event aimed to not only dissect these challenges but also spotlight successful initiatives and strategies aimed at fostering a more inclusive STEM landscape.

 Key Takeaways

Throughout the event, distinguished speakers, including Hanna Vuorikoski from Tietoevry, Susanna Von Hedenberg-Rosenqvist from KONE Corporation, UNIDO GCIP entrepreneur Rita Idehai from Ecobarter Co, and Mattias Larsen from UNIDO LKDF, presented insightful perspectives and actionable strategies to promote gender equality in STEM industries. The discussion was moderated by Cecilia Ugaz Estrada, Director of Gender Equality & Empowerment of Women Unit of UNIDO.

She emphasized the need for flexible work policies and stated that “Without inclusion, there is no diversity.” She further shared that formalized mentoring and sponsorship programs can play a key role in supporting women's career development.

Rita Idehai echoed the call for increased visibility of women in STEM roles, advocating for deliberate efforts to showcase women leadership and mentorship. She also added that “Women in STEM need to talk more. We need to show that women are actually taking up space and leadership roles in the same space.” Moreover, she emphasized the importance of making STEM fields appealing and accessible to young women through engaging outreach and educational initiatives.

Mattias Larsen underscored that the STEM field is a great opportunity, a door opener to many things. He further emphasized the need to promote positive examples and highlight the diverse career paths within STEM disciplines.

Closing Remarks
