Ulaanbaatar, 9 August 2022 – During his visit to Mongolia, UN Secretary-General António Guterres met with UN Resident Coordinator Tapan Mishra and the UN family. The meeting also allowed for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization’s (UNIDO) work to be highlighted:

“As an example of UNIDO’s support, Mongolia upgraded its electric shearing technology for the textile sector, thus added value by transforming raw material into innovative end products”, said Batchimeg Ganbaatar of the SME Research and Development Institution. “As a direct result, over 300 people including all the actors of the wool and cashmere value chains greatly benefited”.

Other successful UNIDO activities in Mongolia include projects in food safety management systems, international quality standards compliance, laboratory capacity building, leather and textile manufacturing.

“UNIDO appreciates the increasing funding for projects on structural transformation towards value addition and manufacturing; in Mongolia, UNIDO particularly supports strategic projects, for example on international quality standards, on reduced mercury use in gold production, on cleantech innovation, and on mini-grid renewable energy systems”, said Stephen Kargbo, UNIDO Representative for Mongolia. “We continue to work with UN agencies to support the public and private sector towards building competitive and sustainable industrial and service sectors”.
