Vienna, 12 April 2024 – The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC) of Brazil have launched a new project under the Partnership for Net Zero Industry Programme. This initiative aims to support Brazil in the development of the Industry, Cement and Steel Sectoral Mitigation Plans, with a budget allocation of around 1.5 million Euros.

During a Brazilian delegation’s visit to UNIDO headquarters on 9 April 2024, UNIDO Managing Director Ciyong Zou and Rodrigo Sobral Rollemberg, Secretary of Green Economy, Decarbonization and Bioindustry at MDIC, discussed UNIDO’s engagement within the newly launched Brazil Industrial Decarbonization Hub (ID Hub) and the broader work on decarbonization, underscoring the mutual commitment to driving forward the decarbonization agenda in Brazil.

Highlighting the value addition of the Brazil ID Hub for the national decarbonization efforts and globally, Ciyong Zou noted: Today’s meeting reflects the deepening partnership between UNIDO and Brazil aimed at achieving shared goals of sustainable development and climate resilience. The Hub can serve as an excellent example of how to leverage climate finance effectively to support decarbonization of heavy industry and can serve as a good showcase to be presented at COP 30”.

UNIDO is supporting the National Mitigation Strategy of Brazil through the development of an industry mitigation plan, sub-sectoral mitigation plans for steel and cement, an industry decarbonization strategy and an investment plan for heavy industries. UNIDO is committed to further supporting Brazil in mobilizing financing for industrial decarbonization and to build on the industrial decarbonization roadmap developed with the Ministry, including projects to be financed by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), Mitigation Action facility (MAF) and International Climate Initiative (IKI). UNIDO will also host the Secretariat of the Brazil ID Hub.

The Partnership for Net Zero Industry will initially assist countries to decarbonize their heavy industries. The Partnership will work to:

  • Support the development of national transformation pathways in developing countries and emerging economies to a climate neutral industry by 2050.
  • Facilitate technology collaboration and prepare a pipeline of investment-ready projects for the deployment of decarbonization solution packages within steel, cement and concrete manufacturers in partner countries.
  • Foster dialogue, international collaboration and global industry-wide knowledge sharing on industry decarbonization solutions, experiences and lessons learned.

The technical assistance facility will be complemented by the Global Matchmaking Platform. The Platform will support developing countries in moving forward with the industry decarbonization agenda by facilitating the alignment, coordination and matchmaking of existing international technical and financial assistance offers and private finance instruments to the needs and priorities of emerging markets and developing economies. The Platform will be open to all emerging market economies and other developing countries that are eligible for official development assistance (ODA).
