UNIDO and the Government of China strengthen collaboration to enhance South-South and Triangular Industrial Cooperation

VIENNA, 12 September 2022 – South-South and Triangular Cooperation leads to greater innovation as it provides opportunities for developing countries to learn from each other and to share best practices.  In recognition of the role of South-South and Triangular Cooperation, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) of the People’s Republic of China have agreed to boost South-South and Triangular Industrial cooperation (SSTIC).

A new initiative titled, “Enhance UNIDO’s South-South and Triangular Industrial Cooperation (SSTIC) services for strengthening industrial partnerships among countries of the Global South”, has been signed by both parties to scale up UNIDO’s capacity to build partnerships, strengthen resource mobilization and support UNIDO’s Member States in the area of SSTIC.

"China is implementing the Global Development Initiative to support developing countries to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. We are proud to be supporting cooperation among countries in the Global South through this UNIDO project. We are confident that this initiative will further enhance and improve UNIDO’s ability to share industrial development solutions and support win-win cooperation among developing countries to achieve SDG 9,” said Mr. Chen Ning, Deputy Director General of MOFCOM.

“This project follows a series of initiatives that enable us to offer enhanced SSTIC services as an attractive complementary modality for inclusive and sustainable industrial development to our Member States”, said Mr. Shenhong Yao, Director of UNIDO’s Office of South-South and Triangular Cooperation. “We would like to thank the Government of China, specifically the Ministry of Commerce, for their strong support that will enable us to expand SSTIC services”, Mr. Yao further added.

The project, with a budget of USD 1.0 million over 4 years, will explore possibilities for private sector engagement, consider South-South financing for industrial development as well as to share solutions to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Global South.

Cognizant of the importance of SSTIC, UNIDO established a dedicated Office of South-South and Triangular Industrial Cooperation in February 2022.
