Low carbon and climate resilient industrial development

The impacts of climate change are already affecting people and ecosystems. Meeting the climate challenge requires industries and institutions - both public and private - to be able to assess and understand climate change, design and implement adequate policies and to work towards resource efficient societies and low emission growth. In particular, interest in adaptation to climate change is growing as it is increasingly recognized that the impact from climate change has become inevitable even with significant mitigation to date.

UNIDO provides support to governments and industries to develop low carbon growth and climate resilient industry though policy advice, vulnerability assessments, implementation of adaptation technologies that synergies mitigation efforts with low-carbon technologies as a paradigm for inclusive and sustainable industrial development.

UNIDO applies the Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) practices to address associated risks from climate change in vulnerable industries by introducing appropriate mitigation and adaptation technologies as well as approaching governments to adopt relevant national policies and strategies to support climate vulnerable industry. RECP techniques are a process improvement that can be utilized to identify the technology intervention for mitigation and adaptation.

The table below shows examples of adaptation technologies that synergies mitigation benefits:

Adaptation technology Potential mitigation co-benefit

Process upgrade for improved material efficiency and product yield

e.g. Refrigeration cycle upgrade for improved cold chain and process cooling

- Reduced energy consumption

- Reduced waste

- Lower global warming potential of refrigerant(s)

- Reduced leakage

- Improved process control and product yield

Integrated water management

- Water saving, cascade, recycle

- Wastewater treatment

- Reduced energy consumption

- Energetic methane utilization

Solid waste management

- Reuse and recycling

- Landfill upgrade

- Reduced raw material consumption consumption

- Energetic methane utilization
