The Role of Industrial Development in the
Achievement of the Millennium Development Goals

The Industrial Development Forum on The Role of Industrial Development in the Achievement of the MDGs, was held on the first day of the General Conference, with addresses by three leading development thinkers:

Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs Professor and Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University
Special Advisor to the United Nations Secretary-General
Mr. Rubens Ricupero Secretary-General of UNCTAD; and
Mr. Carlos Magariños Director-General of UNIDO

The issues raised were discussed at length in the first Round Table on the same subject held later in the evening of that day.

A number of experts and practitioners in development participated as panelists, and the discussion focused on various aspects of structural change and industrialization, particularly from the perspective of the least developed countries and with special emphasis on sub-Saharan Africa.
