Upper Egypt is demographically the youngest region in the country, housing the poorest communities. Enormous opportunities for inclusive and sustainable private sector and job growth exist in the region but are still largely untapped. Extensive assessment and on-the-ground work conducted by UNIDO in Upper Egypt indicate that profitable business opportunities exist in sustainable agriculture and food production, waste management, sustainable energy as well as creative industries.

From cotton seeds to clothing: Enhancing the sustainability, inclusiveness and value addition of the cotton value chain in Egypt

The Egyptian cotton is among the finest and most lustrous varieties and the highest quality fibre. Egypt’s textile industry has historically been considered of paramount importance to the country and its economy. Nonetheless, Egypt still plays a marginal role in the global textile value chain as its textile industry is highly fragmented and its textile products do not meet the needs of the international market. The industry suffers from lack of innovation, high input prices, limited skilled labour, and scarce sustainable agricultural practices.

Industrial Motors Energy Efficiency Programme

Status: Ongoing

The Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency allocated around US$ 3,000,000 of the climate change STAR allocation for UNIDO to work with the Ministry of Industry on developing a programme for promoting energy efficiency for industrial motors.

Feasibility study for district cooling in New Cairo, Egypt

Status: Ongoing

The focus of the feasibility study will be to link the possibility of using district cooling in the New Cairo Capital currently being designed. The study simulates the dynamic cooling loads profile through the chosen district. Design, simulation and optimization of multiple energy inputs powered by natural gas, a solar thermal energy source and a fresh water heat sink, are considered.

Technical assistance on two alternatives to methyl bromide in the palm date sector - Egypt

Status: Ongoing

The objective of this technical assistance project is to eliminate the remaining 6.0 ODP tonnes of MB used in the fumigation of dates by training date fumigators and processors on good fumigation practices when using phosphine tablets and mixtures of phosphine gas and CO2. The training process will place special emphasis on worker safety, by using phosphine concentration meters among other measures.
