South-South cooperation and knowledge-sharing drives achievement of SDG 9 in industry and innovation

PANAMA CITY – UNIDO convenes high-level representatives from Ministries of Industry or Economy of Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries to discuss national progress towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 and opportunities for regional cooperation.

The 3-day High-Level Regional Conference "SDG 9: Progress by Innovation in Latin America and the Caribbean" was opened by Federico Alfaro Boyd, Minister of Commerce and Industry of Panama, Philippa Candler, UNHCR Representative in the Panama Cluster Office and Resident Coordinator a.i. of the United Nations System in Panama and Diego Masera, Chief of the UNIDO Regional Coordination Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Alfaro Boyd, Minister of Commerce and Industry, noted that Panama was pleased to host this key regional event promoting sustainable and inclusive industrial development as a way forward, and encouraged countries to work together and identify complementary interventions for implementing SDG 9.

The Resident Coordinator a.i. of the United Nations System in Panama stated that, “the Conference provides a platform for dialogue, bringing together key decision makers to accelerate support to achieve SDG 9 and to foster South-South and triangular cooperation”.

The Conference will be solution-oriented with national representatives and international experts from UNIDO and partner organizations sharing insights and know-how on key regional priority topics. The Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), the Latin American Association of Development Finance Institutions (ALIDE), and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) are among some of the key partner organizations engaging in the dialogue on:  

  • Circular economy
  • Renewable energy and energy efficiency
  • Gender equality and industrial development
  • Quality infrastructures
  • Innovative financing mechanisms
  • Energy districts
  • Green industrial parks
