UNIDO at the UN Climate Change Conference (Katowice, 3-14 December 2018)

  • Background
  • UNIDO's events
  • At this year’s UN Climate Change Conference (COP24), nations of the world will meet to finalize the rules for the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

The ambitious goal enshrined in the Paris Agreement to keep global temperature rise below 2C will require rapid and far-reaching climate action in all sectors, including in energy, industry, buildings, transport, land and cities.

While industry is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions  accounting for nearly one third of total global emissions  it is also a leading provider of climate technology solutions and green jobs.

As the UN’s specialized agency promoting industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability, UNIDO is committed to enabling a paradigm shift in industrialization in developing countries as a means to build low-emission climate-resilient societies.

UNIDO is currently implementing over 700 projects, which directly contribute to achieving the targets and goals set by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. To enhance knowledge sharing and demonstrate proven and effective solutions for replication and scaling up, UNIDO will showcase some of these projects during a series of COP24 side events. These events will demonstrate how investments in integrated mitigation and adaptation measures using innovative technology can enhance competitiveness of industry and build a low-emissions climate-resilient economy.

It identifies promising clean energy projects at an early stage and provides no-cost coaching and investment facilitation – that includes mentoring for the development of a business plan, investment pitches and a growth strategy. When in place, these measures make it easier for investors to understand a project’s potential, increasing the odds that they will make an investment.
