ABUJA, 20 November 2012 - The Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment and the UNIDO Office in Abuja today commemorated Africa Industrialization Day.

The event featured an exhibition of products made in Nigeria.
The Minister (State) for Trade and Investment of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Samuel Ortom, congratulated his fellow countrymen for their resilience despite infrastructure challenges affecting the industrial sector.

UNIDO representative in Nigeria, Patrick Kormawa, said he was confident Nigeria was on the path to putting together the necessary building blocks for sustainable industrial development.
Kormawa also said that in order to achieve the objectives for industrialization Africa needed to “refine the legal and institutional framework to provide the incentives for investment and trade; develop and implement long-term policies and strategies with focus on specific sectors; develop and implement an industrial upgrading and modernizing programme for targeted priority sectors, and develop skills to support technology and innovation uptake and product quality”.
It was also necessary to strengthen existing industrial corridors, and improve risk mitigation for private investors through partial risk guarantees, added Kormawa.
A the end of the event, the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment presented awards to twelve best performing companies and industries in 2012.
The UNIDO Office in Nigeria was also recognized for its programmes and efforts towards the promotion of sustainable industrialization in Nigeria and the West Africa sub-region.
