Duration: 3-6 working months

Duty Station: UNIDO Headquarters in Vienna

Organizational Context: The Branch provides a range of technical cooperation and capacity-building services to enhance the contribution of the private sector to industrial development and poverty reduction. As such, it supports the formulation and implementation of technical cooperation and institutional capacity-building initiatives to promote private sector development and improve the competitiveness of enterprises, mobilize investments, and facilitate access to appropriate technologies for developing countries. The Branch also supports the development of local productive capacities and responsible investments in a private sector-led process, and promotes the upgrading of industrial enterprises and technical support institutions that drive the economic growth process. These support services are aimed at stimulating technological dynamism for the creation of skilled jobs, enhancing the developmental impact of private sector activities, and supporting the integration of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) into national and global value chains through the establishment of pro-poor business linkages. In providing these services, the Branch cooperates closely with other technical branches, in particular the Agri-Business Development Branch and Trade Capacity-building Branch, and other relevant organizational units of UNIDO. It also relies on the coordinated deployment of UNIDO’s international network of Investment and Technology Promotion Offices (ITPOs). The Branch serves as the focal point for the UNIDO Initiative on Industrial Upgrading and Enterprise Competitiveness, and acts as the focal point within UNIDO for the Donor Committee for Enterprise Development, the UN Global Compact, the UN Private Sector Group, the UN Group on the Information Society (UNGIS), and the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS). It also serves as the secretariat of the Africa Investment Promotion Agency Network.

Tasks: Under the overall guidance of the Branch Director and the direct supervision of the Unit Chief, the intern will perform the following tasks:

1. Research the support for governments in improving the general business environment for private sector development, investment, technology and innovation;

2. Research the support for private and public institutions that promote private sector development and responsible investment, and establish mechanisms for the promotion of sustainable business alliances;

3. Study linkages among enterprises and between enterprises and institutions, including linkages between large corporations and SMEs towards their sustainable integration into national and global value chains;

4. Analyze the capacities of developing countries and the ways to upgrade, develop enterprises and support institutions and improve competitiveness of industries;

5. Assist in the coordination the activities of the international network of ITPOs with UNIDO programmes, projects and field operations to facilitate responsible business partnerships and scale up development impact;

6. Perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualification requirements:

a.) Minimum academic background and/or field of specialisation required: first-level university degree in Business Administration, Technology or a related field and enrolment in a higher-level university programme.

b.) Computer literacy: Microsoft Windows, proficient use of processing tools such as Microsoft Office package (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) is required.

c.) Language skills: Fluency in English required, good knowledge of another official UN working language desirable.
